Founded by Albert Turner in 1967 as an economic push to enable black southerners to own and maintain their own land, the Southwest Alabama Farmers Cooperative Association (SWAFCA) was the first black-owned farm co-operative venture. This was an important but largely overlooked development in civil rights in the deep south.
